Meopham Parish Council wishes to inform residents that a by-election will be held for the vacant seat in the Culverstone and Harvel Ward following the required procedures. Key Issues Facing Meopham Parish
Whilst recent discussions have focused on the future of Pitfield Green Toilets, it is important to recognize that the pressing issues for Meopham go far beyond this single project.
The Parish Council is actively engaged in major matters that will shape the parish in the years to come, including:
1. Devolution and Local Authority Reforms
• Ongoing discussions about local government restructuring could shift more responsibilities from Gravesham Borough Council to the Parish Council.
• This may mean greater influence over local services, community assets, and decision-making – but also increased financial and administrative pressures.
2. Planning Law Changes and the Local Plan
• Gravesham Borough Council is due to publish its revised Local Plan in the third quarter of 2025, which will determine future development in Meopham.
• With changes to national planning laws and pressure to meet housing targets, there is a risk of inappropriate development, particularly concerning Green Belt land.
• The Parish Council needs to ensure that growth is sustainable, proportionate, and in line with local needs.
3. Lower Thames Crossing and Infrastructure Impacts
• The proposed Lower Thames Crossing will have significant regional effects, with potential impacts on traffic flow, air quality, and road infrastructure in Meopham and the surrounding areas.
• The Parish Council will continue to monitor developments and push for mitigation measures to protect the local environment and residents’ quality of life
